I hit the same problem when I tried compiling our software on 4.3. The solution was found by spending quite a while wading through the gcc mailing lists.
One post asked whether the error was an intentional change because he couldn't see why from the standard. The reply was "Yes" (paraphrased), very helpful. :-(
